Are you constantly reliving the past hoping it would change?

Do you often worry about what may or may not happen in the future?

Can you embrace the present moment and experience right now?

Take a few minutes now and see where your thoughts reside. Is it your past, your future, or your present? Based on where you are choosing to focus your energy, how is it making you feel?

This quote by Lao Tsu reminds us of how important it is to stay present, letting go of both yesterday and tomorrow. However, for many, straying wrapped up in events that happened yesterday, a week ago, a year ago or focusing on what may or may not happen tomorrow becomes a natural place of being.

Now there is nothing wrong about reminiscing about the good times or looking forward to something coming your way. It typically only becomes a problem when you focus your energy solely on past negative experiences, as well as imagining all of the future potential worst-case scenarios that may never even happen.

I think you would agree that type of thinking doesn’t lead to feeling a sense of peace and happiness or offer a positive contribution to your overall well-being.

Also, allowing yourself to get trapped in that thinking, what are you missing out on right now?

Believe it or not, we are all time travelers. Think about it. We have anywhere between 50,000-70,000 thoughts per day. That is about 35 and 48 thoughts per minute. Granted we are not aware of the majority of them but any one of them could pull us back in to the past or rocket us in to the future. With those thoughts, we then pull in the emotions that we associate with those thoughts.

The key is mindful awareness. It’s about becoming more mindful of your thoughts. It’s noticing which ones are diverting you either back to the past or looking too far out in the future and how they are making you feel.

Coming from that place you can then choose where you want to focus your energy and bring yourself back in to the present moment.

I remember hearing the following saying recently and I think it’s a great way to sum this up now. Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, and today is a gift!

Become more mindful of your thoughts and allow yourself to let go of both the past and the future and embrace right now.

Now it’s your turn.

How does this quote inspire you?

Tell me about an experience where you were completely focused on either your past or your future and how did it affect you mentally and physically? In either instance, what was it specifically that pulled you in to that moment?

Were you able to ground yourself back in the present moment?  Or are you still feeling stuck in your past or future?
