Do you know who you are?

Do you know what you want?

Are you living a life based on those factors?

Take a few minutes now and answer those questions honestly. They may sound like simple questions but how often do you take the time to check in with yourself and see if you are actually living a life congruent with those things.

This quote by Stephanie Perkins sheds light on the fact that when we are in alignment with who we are, what we are about, and what we want, nothing can truly upset us unless we allow it to. It’s about creating our life experience based on how we want to live.  It’s creating the types of relationships we want, our home life, our work experience, and not letting anyone or anything tell you otherwise.

However, I feel many of us at times allow the external world around us to dictate how we live. Let’s face it; we are bombarded with advertising and marketing telling us we need to look a certain way or to have some material thing to feel good. Is that true? Do we really need someone else to tell us how to feel?

But yet, sometimes, we do. I can admit that I’ve been guilty of allowing that.

Think about it. If you have clarity about whom you are and what you want would you let people and situations get you down?

Take for example a relationship. Your partner isn’t treating you the way you want to be treated. That could be pretty upsetting. However, if you were clear on what type of relationship you want to experience, would you allow yourself to stay in it if it is not working?

How about your job? I find it so interesting how we allow our jobs to stress us out, piss us off, upset and anger us. Yet we are the ones who made the choice to work there. No one forced us. But if we are truly clear on who we are and what we want would we choose make a change or stay there? And if we stay there, can we better appreciate the benefits of that job rather than what it’s not?

As I say this, I’ve lived through both of these and I was neither clear on who I was or even what I wanted. I had no idea. I never took the time to answer those questions and I mean truly answering them. It’s going beyond the surface of just wanting someone to be with or needing money.

You gotta look deep down. You gotta look within. When gotta get to your core. You might shed some tears along the way. You might uncover some shit you didn’t want to see.

But when you have a solid understanding of your values, your wants, your needs, you can choose your life experience. It’s creating a life by your design, not by someone else, and not settling for anything less. When you can do that, it’s like becoming bulletproof. When you have that clarity, nothing can upset you unless you let it. That is how to tap in to inner happiness.

Now it’s your turn.

How does this quote inspire you?

Tell me about an experience where you let the external world upset you because you weren’t clear on who you are and what you want? Did you even perhaps settle for something or someone that wasn’t in alignment with you? And would you have made a different choice if you had more clarity about yourself?
